Prof. Johnston Birchall

Prof. Johnston Birchall, Senior Lecturer in Social Policy, Stirling University and Senior Associate, New Economics Foundation, UK
Johnston Birchall is a Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at Stirling University and Senior Associate of the New Economics Foundation. He specializes in the study of mutual and cooperative businesses, and in member participation and governance of public service delivery agencies. He has a research programme developing a 'mutual incentives' theory of what motivates people to participate in a variety of settings: public services, consumer cooperatives, social enterprises and so on (mainly ESRC-funded, with Richard Simmons). His latest book explores the potential of cooperatives in the participatory development process. Some relevant publications are Co-op: the People's Business (Manchester University Press, 1994), The International Co-operative Movement (Manchester UP, 1997), Decentralising Public Service Management (with C Pollitt, 1998, Macmillan), The New Mutualism in Public Policy (edited, 2001, Routledge), A Mutual Trend: how to run rail and water in the public interest (New Economics Foundation, 2002), and Rediscovering the Cooperative Advantage: Poverty reduction through self-help (ILO, 2003).

Pierre Rondot is an agricultural economist with extensive (25 years) field experience, working with rural communities and agricultural research and extension institutions in Africa and Asia. He was seconded to the World Bank Agriculture and Rural Development Department ARD) by Cirad (Centre de coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement, France) six years ago where his job is to promote rural producer organizations participation in Bank projects preparation and implementation. Mr. Rondot is the Bank focal point for rural producer organizations.

Bernard Kadasia, Director, Regional Office for East, Central and Southern Africa, International Co-operative Alliance (ICA ROECSA)

Bernard Kadasia joined the ICA Office for the region in 1987 and has served as agricultural marketing and price monitoring officer, regional development officer and project manager research, planning and consultancy. Before joining ICA, he was a government cooperative officer n Kenya and later head of planning at the Kenya National Federation of Co-operatives. Mr Kadasia has carried out many studies and consultancies on cooperative development and management.

Paul Hazen, President and Chief Executive Officer, National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA), USA

Paul Hazen is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Cooperative Business Association, the leading national cooperative membership association in the United States. Mr. Hazen held the position of Chief Operating Officer of NCBA prior to his selection as CEO in 1998. Widely known for his detailed knowledge of, and extensive experience in the domestic and international co-op sector, Hazen is called upon to speak in national and international forums on the role of cooperatives in community and economic development. In 2001, he was named CEO Communicator of the Year by the Cooperative Communicators Association. Since his selection as CEO, Hazen has led several important new NCBA initiatives, including the formation of the Urban Cooperative Development Initiative, the development of an enhanced cooperative education program including an online co-op university, and the creation of a new top-level Internet domain exclusively for cooperatives -- .coop. Under his direction, NCBA’s extensive international cooperative development programme has grown to more than USD 18 million in annual development funding, with projects in more than 15 countries. Hazen serves on the boards of directors for the Consumer Federation of America, Arlington Food Cooperative, United Seniors Health Cooperative, Telecommunications Cooperative Network, and NCB Credit Corporation. Before joining NCBA, Hazen was Executive Director for Rural Housing, Inc., a statewide developer of cooperative housing in Wisconsin.
