This year the theme of the International Day highlights the priority areas of work of the Co-operative Movement and the United Nations UN - development - and links to major initiatives of the movement with those of the UN.
The messages for International Day will be a valuable input for the discussions at General Assembly of the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) which will focus on "Co-operatives for Democratic, Social and Economic Development". In addition, the documents and events planned to celebrate the Day will provide an opportunity for co-operators and their communities to learn more about the United Nations Millennium Development Goals - time-bound and measurable goals and targets for combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women - and assist in making considerable progress in reaching these goals.
